Romanesque Crucifix – The Great God of Altenstadt

This extraordinary crucifix is a reproduction of the famous original from the early 13th century, venerated in Altenstadt. Due to its monumental size of 3.20 m and impressive presence, it became known among the people as “The Great God of Altenstadt” – an expression of deepest devotion and reverence.

Christ is depicted here as a majestic, almost superhuman figure. Instead of a crown of thorns, he wears a gilded crown with ornamental band – a symbol of his royal and priestly dignity. This representation shows notable Italian influences from Arezzo (Tuscany), visible in posture and expression.

This cross is crafted in the Val Gardena workshops of Franco, where traditional woodcarving and religious expression merge into one.
