Madonna with Child, seated – Romanesque wood sculpture based on the Varna Madonna

This Romanesque Madonna with Child in a seated position is a culturally significant replica of the so-called Varna Madonna, created at the end of the 13th century. The original is located in the parish church of Vahrn near Brixen in South Tyrol.

The figure impressively illustrates the transition from Romanesque austerity to Gothic refinement, as seen during the 13th and 14th centuries. The frontal alignment, calm posture and direct gaze emphasize the spiritual presence of the depiction. The Christ Child sits upright on the Mother’s lap, both with restrained expressions and clear lines.

Crafted with traditional artisanry in Val Gardena, the sculpture is available in two high-quality wood types:

Maple wood – 28 cm (fine and dense, ideal for delicate details)
Linden wood – 56 cm (soft and warm, ideal for larger sizes)
