Ortisei (St. Ulrich): The Heart of Val Gardena's Woodcarving Tradition

A Cultural and Artistic Hub in the Dolomites

Ortisei, known as St. Ulrich in German, is the principal town of Val Gardena, boasting a population of approximately 5000 residents. Situated as the first major settlement accessible from Ponte Gardena or Chiusa, Ortisei seamlessly blends rich cultural heritage with modern amenities.

Stemma - Comune di OrtiseiThe town is renowned for its vibrant pedestrian zone lined with hotels, shops, and artisan workshops. It also serves as the educational center of the valley, housing all higher education institutions, including the art-focused high school and the "Cademia" vocational school for arts and crafts. Established in 1890, "Cademia" traces its roots back to early 19th-century drawing schools and woodcarving workshops.

A Legacy of Masterful Woodcarving

With the founding of the art school, Ortisei officially became the epicenter for arts, sculpture, and woodcarving south of the Brenner Pass. The town has produced numerous renowned artists, such as Josef Moroder Lusenberg, Johann Baptist Moroder, and Ferdinand Demetz. Their masterpieces adorn local churches—including the Parish Church of St. Ulrich, the Antonius Chapel in the pedestrian zone, the St. Anna Church at the cemetery, and the Church of St. Jakob—as well as the "Museum de Gherdëina," which showcases the region's rich artistic heritage.

Today, woodcarving and sculpture remain vital to Ortisei's economy, alongside tourism. Since 1929, the Franco company has been headquartered here, now in its fourth generation of family ownership. Inspired by the successful painting workshop of his father, founder Franz Comploj—known as "Franco"—established a legacy that continues to honor his vision and craftsmanship.
