Religious Wood Figures from Val Gardena: A Legacy of Faith and Artistry

Over 400 Years of Sacred Woodcarving Tradition

Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, Val Gardena has been a bastion of woodcarving excellence for over four centuries. What began as a humble pastime among the valley's farming communities during long winter months evolved into a revered art form. Early artisans crafted rudimentary figures, which gradually transformed into intricate sculptures of Madonnas, saints, crucifixes, and nativity scenes. This deep-rooted tradition reflects the community's enduring faith and commitment to preserving their cultural heritage.

The establishment of the art school in Ortisei in the 19th century marked a significant milestone, nurturing generations of skilled woodcarvers and artists. Today, the valley's devotion is evident in its three prominent churches—the Parish Church in the main square, the Antonius Church at "Piazza S.Antonio", and the St. Anna Church in the local cemetery—as well as in the historical religious figures displayed at the Museum de Gherdëina in the center of Ortisei.
