The Stations of the Cross recount in 14 scenes the Passion of Jesus Christ up to his burial and are one of the most significant Easter traditions. The oldest known Stations of the Cross can be found in Lübeck (1493) and feature – as was customary – only seven stations, symbolizing the seven falls of Jesus.
By the 17th century, the 14-station version became widespread. Since the 18th century, all Catholic churches have been encouraged to have their own Stations of the Cross.
